The British Ministry of Defence is investigating reports of warning shots fired by a Russian frigate, the Admiral Grigorovich, in the English Channel. The incident occurred approximately 30 kilometers south of the Isle of Wight, outside of British territorial waters, near an English yacht. No injuries or damage to the yacht have been reported. British naval vessel HMS Mersey, along with another ship, was monitoring the Russian vessel at the time. This event follows the boarding of a tanker suspected of being part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” used to circumvent sanctions, two days prior. The tanker, flying a Cameroonian flag, was seized and its Indian captain detained on suspicion of carrying Russian oil in violation of sanctions related to the war in Ukraine. It marked the first time the UK has boarded a vessel from this fleet, and a connection between the two incidents remains unclear.
