Rotterdam’s mayor has designated the Nesselande beach area a safety risk zone for the duration of the summer, extending previous measures until October 1st. The decision follows disturbances involving young people during warmer weather in May, including fights and a stabbing incident. Police will conduct preventative searches of individuals and vehicles accessing the beach and boulevard. Authorities report seizing weapons like knives, pepper spray, and ammunition during prior checks. The extended measures aim to ensure a safe recreational environment for families and address calls for illegal gatherings of rival youth groups on social media. Existing “warm weather protocols” – increasing security personnel from various agencies when temperatures reach 23 degrees Celsius – will remain in effect alongside the new preventative searches. The city believes initial security efforts have already had a positive impact.
