Twenty-one bodies were secretly moved from Dubbeldam cemetery to Essenhof cemetery in Dordrecht, Netherlands, without informing families or local authorities. The relocation occurred after the expiration of burial rights in 2020, when remains were found unsuitable for common burial. A cemetery employee made the decision to move the remains to pre-adapted vault graves, hoping for further decomposition. The municipality and bereaved families were not notified, and the necessary permits were not obtained. Local officials have condemned the action, stating the deceased should have remained at Dubbeldam, respecting families’ choices for final resting places. The city is now contacting families of those buried between 1997 and 2003 at Dubbeldam, as identifying the specific remains is proving difficult, and plans to return the bodies to Dubbeldam for reburial.
