A recent research mission led by the French CNRS has revealed the scale of radioactive waste dumped in the North Atlantic Ocean. Between the 1950s and 1990s, European countries deposited over 200,000 barrels of radioactive waste into these waters. The ongoing NODSSUM project commenced its first mapping mission in the summer of 2025 to assess the condition and location of these barrels. The waste is classified as low and medium-level radioactivity. Researchers are now studying the waste’s impact on the marine ecosystem. This discovery raises concerns about long-term environmental consequences and potential risks to marine life and potentially human health. Further investigation is planned to fully understand the scope and effects of this historical pollution.
