Experts warn that China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is shifting its military strategy towards a more comprehensive “systems-oriented warfare” approach. This evolution moves beyond simply focusing on superior weaponry and prioritizes the integration of all combat elements – intelligence, AI, communications, logistics, and infrastructure – into a unified system. Taiwanese analysts believe this presents significant new challenges to the island’s existing defence strategies, which may be geared towards countering individual weapon platforms. The PLA’s emphasis on interconnected systems aims to overwhelm and disable an opponent’s capabilities across multiple domains simultaneously. This demands Taiwan reassess its defensive capabilities and develop countermeasures focused on disrupting these integrated systems. Successfully defending against this new approach will require a comprehensive, adaptable, and technologically advanced defence framework.
