Two separate family shootings in the United States this weekend resulted in the deaths of fourteen people in Pennsylvania and Georgia. In Erie, Pennsylvania, a 45-year-old man shot and killed nine people, including family members and a friend of one of them, before taking his own life. The shooting occurred approximately 200 kilometers from Pittsburgh, and police responded to reports of gunfire around 5:00 PM local time, discovering two deceased women outside the home before utilizing robots and drones to locate further victims inside. Among the victims were a woman eight months pregnant, a five-year-old boy, and a one-year-old girl. In Douglas, Georgia, five adults were killed, also apparently in a domestic violence situation followed by the shooter’s suicide; one victim managed to call for help and briefly escaped before dying en route to a hospital. The Pennsylvania police stated the scene inside was too horrific to describe, and Georgia authorities reported the victims were all family members of the shooter and had previously received a complaint from the shooter’s wife about smoking inside the house. The motives behind both shootings remain under investigation.
