Six patients were transferred from Xai-Xai Provincial Hospital to HCM on Sunday after reporting corruption schemes related to receiving medical care. The reports led to the detention of three out of five hospital employees accused of illegally soliciting payments. Allegedly, these illicit charges ranged from 30,000 to 50,000 meticais. The arrests follow accusations of a corrupt system where patients were required to pay for timely medical attention at the Xai-Xai facility. Authorities are investigating the extent of the corruption and the involvement of other personnel. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about transparency and ethical conduct within the healthcare system in Mozambique. Further details regarding the detained employees and the investigation are expected to be released soon.
