The Wabo language, spoken in Yapen Islands Regency, Papua, is on the verge of extinction, with fluency now limited to older generations aged 50-70. This decline prompted Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to accelerate efforts to preserve the language. BRIN is currently compiling a comprehensive grammar of Wabo to safeguard this important part of Papua’s cultural heritage. The initiative aims to document the language’s structure and vocabulary before it is lost. Researchers hope that a detailed grammatical record will aid in revitalization efforts and future language learning. The project underscores the vulnerability of indigenous languages in Indonesia and the urgent need for documentation and preservation programs. This work is crucial for maintaining the cultural diversity of the region.
