Pakistan’s National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) have mandated fire extinguishers in all vehicles, particularly those transporting passengers and cargo, effective June 24th. The new regulation aims to mitigate fire risks following accidents, prompted by a recent fatal incident on the Islamabad-Murree Expressway where a van fire claimed ten lives. Vehicles found without functioning fire extinguishers will face legal penalties, including being barred from motorway and national highway access. A public awareness campaign is currently underway to inform drivers about the new rules and ensure extinguishers are in working order and not expired. Authorities emphasize that expired or non-functional extinguishers will not meet the requirement. The NHMP hopes this measure will significantly improve road safety and reduce the severity of accidents involving fire.
