Pakistan’s Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has amended the Code of Conduct for judges, allowing them to attend political and diplomatic functions with prior permission from their respective chief justices. Previously, a complete ban was in place regarding attendance at such events. The amendments, approved during a June 11th meeting presided over by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, also include the newly established Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) within the scope of the Code of Conduct. Further revisions to Article XV reinforce the requirement for judges to maintain impartiality and resist undue influence, mandating written notification to senior judges of any attempts at interference. The SJC meeting included chief justices from the Federal Constitutional Court, Lahore High Court, and Peshawar High Court. These changes aim to clarify and update the guidelines governing judicial conduct within Pakistan’s legal system.
