Norway’s parliamentary leadership has approved substantial salary increases for members of parliament, government officials, and the Prime Minister, effective May 1st. Parliamentarians will now earn an annual salary of 1,272,209 kroner, while the Prime Minister’s salary will rise to 2,234,978 kroner, and government members will receive 1,815,703 kroner annually. The decision has sparked criticism from opposition parties, notably the Red Party, who argue the increases demonstrate a disconnect between elected officials and the citizens they represent. Red Party leader Marie Sneve Martinussen highlighted recent labor strikes focused on wage improvements as a contrast to the parliament’s decision. Despite opposition, a majority in parliament supported the salary adjustments, amounting to an increase of 57,000 kroner per year for most parliamentarians. The Socialist Left party also voiced opposition to the pay rise.
