A revised national curriculum for mathematics in Norwegian primary and secondary schools will be implemented in August, prioritizing fundamental arithmetic skills. The update responds to criticism that the 2020 curriculum placed excessive emphasis on mathematical exploration and reflection at the expense of basic calculations. Knowledge Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun stated the adjustment clarifies that students must first master core computational abilities. The previous curriculum, introduced under the Erna Solberg administration, had faced concerns regarding its balance between conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. This change aims to strengthen students’ foundational mathematical competence. The revised curriculum applies to all students from the 1st to the 10th grade. The government anticipates improved outcomes in basic mathematical proficiency as a result of this shift.
