Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, four homes in the Cottages at Cypress Run neighborhood of Hendersonville, North Carolina, are slated for demolition. These properties had previously undergone repairs thanks to homeowner initiatives and community volunteers, but continued vulnerability to flooding prompted a different course of action. Homeowners opted for voluntary buyouts facilitated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This decision aligns with the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which aims to transform flood-prone land into green spaces. The program’s goal is to mitigate future flood risks and enhance community resilience in the face of increasingly severe weather events. The demolition marks a proactive step toward long-term flood management in the area.
