A coordinated attack by jihadist groups targeted Niger’s international airport in the capital, Niamey, and a connected military airbase on Thursday. The attack resulted in the deaths of eleven soldiers and two civilians, according to authorities. The military junta reported killing 22 attackers and apprehending 20 more, seizing a significant quantity of weapons. Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked group, has claimed responsibility for the assault, mirroring similar attacks in neighboring Burkina Faso and Mali. This incident follows a large-scale attack on the same airport in January, carried out by a different terrorist organization affiliated with the Islamic State. The attack underscores escalating violence in the Sahel region, fueled by competition between multiple jihadist groups, and comes after a similar attack in Bamako, Mali in April. Niger’s authorities have stated the situation is now under control and air traffic has resumed.
