The Dutch province of Limburg is warning of a potential widespread raccoon infestation across the Netherlands if current control measures are not intensified. An estimated 100-200 raccoons currently inhabit southern Limburg, and while population growth appears to have slowed, it could rapidly increase without increased efforts. Limburg has allocated €750,000 to raccoon control through 2030, exceeding previous spending, funding a reporting system and professional capture teams. The province stresses the need for national government and neighboring provinces to fulfill commitments outlined in a national invasive species action plan, aiming for complete eradication by 2027. However, cooperation with Belgium and Germany is limited, as raccoons are considered established species in those countries and are not actively controlled there. Limburg officials express concern over the continuous influx of raccoons from neighboring countries, complicating eradication efforts and posing a significant threat to the Netherlands.
