A significant investment in cold storage facilities in Nepal’s Sudurpaschim province has largely failed to yield results, with twelve projects remaining incomplete after five years. Millions of dollars were allocated to these projects intended to minimize post-harvest losses for local farmers. However, construction has been hampered by a combination of factors including inadequate initial planning, substantial delays from contractors, and a critical lack of consistent electricity supply. Consequently, the majority of the facilities are currently unusable, defeating the original purpose of preserving agricultural produce. Local stakeholders express concern over the wasted funds and the continued losses faced by farmers due to spoilage. Authorities have not yet provided a clear timeline for project completion or addressed the underlying issues preventing their operationalization. The stalled projects highlight challenges in infrastructure development and implementation within the region.
