Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, has advocated for a new international alliance dubbed ‘Sagarmatha to Sea’ ahead of the COP31 climate conference. This proposed coalition aims to unite mountain nations like Nepal with vulnerable island states facing similar climate change impacts. Khanal stressed the urgent need for increased climate finance to support adaptation and mitigation efforts in these regions. He further emphasized the critical importance of a fully functional Loss and Damage Fund to address the irreversible consequences of climate change already being experienced. The ‘Sagarmatha to Sea’ alliance intends to amplify the voices of these geographically distinct, yet equally threatened, countries on the global stage. This initiative seeks to build solidarity and push for more ambitious climate action from major polluting nations. The proposal highlights the shared vulnerability of high-altitude and low-lying nations to climate change’s devastating effects.
