A painting looted by Nazis during World War II has been ordered to be returned to the heirs of its original owner. The Baroque-style portrait, titled “Lady’s Portrait,” was discovered in 2023 during a real estate listing near Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the home of the daughter of a Nazi fugitive. The painting was part of a collection stolen from Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker after the Netherlands was occupied by Nazi Germany in 1940. Patricia Kadgien, the daughter, agreed to relinquish the artwork to avoid prosecution for possessing stolen property. Her father, Friedrich Kadgien, was a senior advisor to Hermann Göring, a top Nazi official. As part of a plea deal, Kadgien and her husband will donate 4.8 million pesos (approximately $3,185) to a local hospital and avoid criminal charges. The painting will be temporarily displayed at the Holocaust Museum in Buenos Aires to raise awareness.
