NASA’s attempt to rescue the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a vital gamma-ray telescope, has unfortunately failed. The rescue satellite, Link, developed to boost Swift back into orbit, has become partially uncontrollable. Swift, launched in 2004 and exceeding its expected lifespan, lacks its own propulsion and has been steadily descending towards Earth. Recent intense solar storms accelerated this descent, prompting the urgent and unprecedented rescue mission. Currently orbiting at just 375 kilometers, Swift is now at significant risk of burning up in the atmosphere, representing a loss for the scientific community. The telescope has been instrumental in studying powerful cosmic explosions, such as collapsing stars and merging neutron stars, for two decades.
