NASA successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Florida, initiating a mission to unravel the mysteries of dark matter, dark energy, and the accelerating expansion of the universe. The $4 billion telescope is expected to map vast portions of the cosmos over five years, observing billions of galaxies and potentially discovering hundreds of thousands of exoplanets, significantly increasing the current count of known planets beyond our solar system. Equipped with a 300-megapixel infrared camera, Roman offers a wider field of view and faster observation speeds than the Hubble Space Telescope – reportedly able to observe in a month what would take Hubble a century. It will also search for previously undetected black holes and create a massive sky map. Scientists hope the Roman telescope will shed light on the composition of the universe – of which only 5% is ordinary matter – and the forces driving its expansion, seeking answers about the elusive nature of dark matter and dark energy.
