Uganda’s High Court has determined that General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, did not interfere with the treason trial of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and co-accused Obeid Lutale. The ruling stemmed from a petition filed by Besigye and Lutale concerning the deportation of their lawyer, senior counsel Martha Karua, on June 22, 2026. Judge Simon Peter Kinobe presided over the case and delivered the verdict. The petitioners argued that Karua’s deportation was an attempt to influence the trial, however, the court found no evidence of Muhoozi’s involvement in the matter. This decision potentially resolves a point of contention in the ongoing legal proceedings against Besigye. The court's ruling affirms the independence of the trial process.
