Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo paid tribute to Bishop Osório Citorra during his funeral in Quelimane, describing his death as an irreparable loss for the Catholic Church and the nation. Chapo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to thoroughly investigate the bishop’s assassination and bring those responsible to justice. He lauded Citorra’s significant contributions to Mozambique’s contemporary history, highlighting his dedication to the church and national development. The President condemned the “barbaric and cowardly” nature of the killing, which occurred at the bishop’s residence. Authorities have already detained three suspects as part of an ongoing investigation led by the Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), with reinforcements dispatched from other provinces. Chapo emphasized that Citorra’s legacy of pastoral dedication and wisdom will endure in the memories of Mozambicans. The President assured both the church and the wider community that no effort will be spared in pursuing a full and transparent investigation.
