The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reports that over 1.3 million people have been displaced in Mozambique since 2017 due to armed violence and terrorism in Cabo Delgado province. The announcement was made during World Refugee Day commemorations in Pemba, highlighting the theme of safety for all. Despite some improvements in conflict areas, internal displacement continues alongside Mozambique’s role as a host country for asylum seekers. The UNHCR representative in Mozambique, Isadora Zoni, emphasized the urgent need for dignified living conditions, including access to education, healthcare, and documentation, for refugees and internally displaced persons. Protection and inclusion are crucial for social integration and rebuilding lives amidst ongoing humanitarian challenges. The event brought together displaced communities, host communities, and local authorities to demonstrate solidarity. The UNHCR reiterated the importance of strengthening protection mechanisms and creating conditions for safe and dignified reconstruction.
