Mountain rescue teams are increasingly called to assist injured or stranded hikers, prompting warnings from the Dutch Climbing and Mountaineering Association (NKBV). A key issue is underestimation of the challenges, with some hikers attempting routes in inappropriate footwear. While fatalities haven’t increased, the number of hikers requiring assistance is trending upwards, as exemplified by a recent fall in Slovenia involving a Dutch national. Thorough preparation, including researching routes and assessing personal fitness, is crucial to prevent incidents. Hikers are advised to check local conditions with tourist information centers, as weather can change rapidly and pose significant risks like rockslides. Essential gear includes layered clothing, rain protection, a thermal blanket, a fully charged phone, and sufficient water.
