A new Climate TRACE report reveals a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions in Mongolia during the first half of 2026. Globally, Mongolia ranks 48th in emissions, with the transportation sector identified as a key contributor to recent growth. Emissions from transportation rose by 3.4%, representing an increase of 117,853 tons of CO2e compared to the previous year. The largest sources of emissions nationally were fuels, agricultural land use, and coal mining, but transportation is a rapidly growing concern. Ulaanbaatar, Ömnögovi, Töv, and Selenge provinces exhibited the highest emission levels, largely attributed to industry, transport, and fuel combustion. While some regions like Khentii, Arkhangai, and Dornod saw decreases due to reduced transport activity and wildfires, overall emissions continue to climb, highlighting the need for mitigation strategies.
