The tripartite National Committee on Labor and Social Partnership in Mongolia decided in August 2026 to increase the minimum wage from 792,000 MNT to 1,000,000 MNT, effective January 1, 2027. However, the Mongolian Trade Union Federation (MTUF) has reported that the upcoming national budget for 2027 still calculates salaries based on the old rate of 792,000 MNT, failing to reflect this increase. MTUF President E. Tamir stated that the committee has the legal authority to set the minimum wage, considering economic factors like inflation and employment levels, and revises it every two years. While the wage was increased by 26.3%, raising the hourly minimum to 5,900 MNT, the Minister of Labor and Social Protection has been unresponsive, leading to the budget’s continued use of the previous figure. The MTUF deems this unacceptable, emphasizing that the minimum wage represents the lowest permissible compensation for basic jobs. This change also impacts sector-specific minimum wages tied to the national rate, with increases ranging from 1.2x in telecommunications to 2x in the mining sector.
