M-Pesa, a mobile financial service launched in Kenya in 2007 by Safaricom, has fundamentally altered the country’s business landscape. The service enables users to manage finances—depositing, withdrawing, transferring funds, and making payments—directly through their mobile phones. Crucially, M-Pesa operates without requiring users to possess traditional bank accounts, significantly increasing financial inclusion. The name itself, a portmanteau of “mobile” and the Swahili word for “money” (“pesa”), reflects its core function. M-Pesa’s success demonstrates the potential of mobile technology to overcome barriers to financial access in developing economies. It has become a dominant force in Kenyan transactions, reshaping how business is conducted and providing economic opportunities for a wider population.
