Residents of approximately ten villages in the Bankass circle of Mali's Mopti region have returned to their homes. Many of these individuals had been internally displaced for nearly seven years due to violence perpetrated by the Group of Support for Islam and Muslims (Jnim). The group is known to be affiliated with al-Qaeda. For years, local and customary authorities resisted entering into agreements with the militants. However, in recent weeks, these leaders finally conceded to the group's demands. By agreeing to comply with the rules imposed by the jihadists, the villagers hope to avoid further targeted attacks. This development marks a shift toward local submission to ensure the safety of the returning population.
