Live-action role-players are increasingly seeking refuge from the modern digital world by immersing themselves in meticulously recreated Medieval life in Europe. Despite the hardships of a historically accurate existence – including a harsh diet and the realities of violence – participants report a significant improvement in well-being. The appeal lies in escaping the constant connectivity and negativity of algorithmic feeds and doomscrolling. By fully engaging in a physical, social world with clearly defined boundaries, these “larpers” find a sense of purpose and community often lacking in contemporary society. This deliberate disconnection provides a haven from modern anxieties and a chance to experience life at a different pace. Participants value the tangible and immediate nature of Medieval re-enactment over the abstract world of online interaction.
