Kyrgyzstan’s parliament has approved amendments to its legislation lowering the thresholds required to trigger insurance payouts following natural disasters. Previously, insurance coverage for earthquake damage required a seismic intensity of 6 on the Richter scale; this has now been reduced to 5. Similarly, the wind speed threshold for insurance claims related to wind damage has been lowered from 25 meters per second to 20 meters per second. The changes, passed after a third reading in the Jogorku Keneş, aim to provide more accessible financial assistance to citizens affected by less severe, yet still damaging, earthquakes and strong winds. This adjustment is expected to broaden the scope of insurance coverage and offer support to a larger segment of the population. The amendments are intended to bolster disaster relief efforts and improve financial security for residents vulnerable to these natural events. These lowered thresholds will likely result in increased insurance claims following future occurrences.
