A major archaeological discovery in southern Kazakhstan’s Burkhansai Gorge has revealed over 1,200 ancient petroglyphs and a rare Old Turkic runic inscription. Located in the Zhualy District of the Jambyl Region, the site offers new insights into the region’s ancient pastoral communities and their cultural practices. The rock carvings depict scenes likely related to the daily life and beliefs of people who inhabited the area centuries ago. Experts believe the Turkic inscription is particularly significant, providing valuable information about the development of early writing systems in Central Asia. This finding contributes to a greater understanding of the historical connections between nomadic groups and the spread of cultural influences across the region. Further research is planned to fully document and interpret the extensive collection of rock art. The discovery highlights Kazakhstan’s rich archaeological heritage.
