Kazakh artist Radina Yassuyeva spent a year living as a nomad on the steppe to deeply understand Kazakhstan’s cultural heritage. Questioning whether traditions are truly understood without lived experience, she moved beyond historical accounts to immerse herself in nomadic life. Her journey involved experiencing the daily routines and challenges inherent in this traditional lifestyle. Yassuyeva aims to explore the authenticity of cultural memory and symbols within Kazakhstan. The artist’s project challenges conventional understanding and seeks answers beyond academic study. Her firsthand experience aims to provide insight into the realities of a fading way of life, prompting reflection on its contemporary relevance. The work investigates the line between living tradition and constructed national myth.
