Turkish prosecutors are demanding a prison sentence of up to four and a half years for Nasuh Mahruki, a mountaineer and vocal government critic, currently in jail. The charges stem from a social media post Mahruki made alleging government complicity in the 2016 coup attempt. According to the prosecution, Mahruki falsely claimed officials deliberately allowed the coup to unfold to justify subsequent political changes. He is accused of making statements that denigrate the Turkish government and legal institutions. Mahruki, known for founding a rescue group, has been a long-time critic of President Erdoğan's administration. This case raises concerns about freedom of speech and the suppression of dissent in Turkey following the failed coup. The investigation was conducted by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Istanbul.
