Iran announced an increase in gasoline prices for high-consumption users, adjusting its three-tier quota system due to declining oil refining capacity caused by Western sanctions linked to its nuclear program. Currently, the first 60 liters are priced at 1,500 toman per liter, the next 50 at 3,000 toman, and any additional amount at 5,000 toman – with the toman being a non-official unit equal to 10 rials. The third tier will now double to 10,000 toman (approximately 4.5 cents) per liter starting September 8th, according to government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohejerani. The first and second tiers will remain unchanged. As one of the countries with the cheapest gasoline globally, price adjustments are politically sensitive in Iran. The Iranian rial has also significantly weakened, trading at over 2.2 million per US dollar, compared to 1.7 million before February 28th, amid expectations of further US sanctions and potential fuel price increases.
