The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has initiated a program to standardize sign language terminology for Islamic religious education, specifically targeting the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. This affirmative action program, named the Islamic Sign Language Glossary, aims to ensure individuals with sensory disabilities have equal access to understanding religious teachings. Currently, a lack of standardized sign language for religious concepts presents a barrier to full participation in Islamic practices. The Ministry is working to develop a comprehensive glossary covering key Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) terms. This initiative seeks to promote inclusivity and religious understanding within the deaf community across Indonesia. The project represents a significant step towards accommodating the religious needs of people with disabilities and fostering a more accessible religious landscape.
