Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal has affirmed the legality of a law criminalizing calls to boycott local elections, specifically through casting blank votes. The unanimous decision by five judges rejected an appeal from So Tsun-fung, a former student leader. The law targets advocacy for election boycotts, a tactic previously used by pro-democracy activists. So Tsun-fung, formerly of the Chinese University student union, had challenged the law’s impact on freedom of expression. The ruling effectively reinforces restrictions on political dissent and participation in Hong Kong’s electoral process. This decision signals a continued tightening of control over political activity in the region following the implementation of the national security law.
