Over 200 families in Arunachal Pradesh are generating income and protecting 100 square kilometers of forest through the sustainable harvesting and sale of “Khagi,” a native Himalayan spice. The community-led initiative directly links economic benefits to forest preservation, incentivizing locals to actively safeguard their land and biodiversity. Revenue generated, totaling Rs 39 lakh, funds critical forest patrols and ecological monitoring efforts. This innovative approach fosters both economic empowerment and environmental stewardship among indigenous communities. The project also plays a vital role in conserving crucial habitats for transboundary wildlife. By valuing the forest’s resources, the initiative ensures long-term ecological health and community well-being.
