Guinea-Bissau is facing a growing mpox outbreak, declared an epidemic on July 4th, with 46 suspected cases reported to date, alongside seven confirmed infections. Alarmingly, children comprise over half of the cases, including 16 children under the age of four. The outbreak began with a confirmed case in a 27-year-old woman just over a week before the epidemic declaration. Authorities fear the virus may be spreading undetected within the West African nation. This high proportion of pediatric cases raises concerns about the vulnerability of young children to the disease and highlights the need for targeted public health interventions. Further investigation and control measures are urgently required to curb the spread and protect the population, especially its youngest members.
