The University of Ghana’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has advocated for the deliberate integration of African languages into the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Addressing an audience at the University of Warwick, she cautioned that Africa could be left behind in the ongoing AI revolution without adequate linguistic representation. Professor Appiah Amfo emphasized that Africa’s rich linguistic diversity represents a significant asset, not an obstacle, to technological progress. She argued that incorporating African languages into AI systems is crucial for ensuring the continent’s participation and benefit from AI advancements. The Vice-Chancellor’s remarks highlighted the importance of preserving and utilizing Africa’s knowledge systems within the context of emerging technologies. Failure to do so, she warned, risks marginalizing African voices and perspectives in the global AI landscape.
