Researchers at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana have identified a potential new approach to combating prostate cancer. A study published in *Cancer Cell International* details how an extract from the root of the *Croton membranaceus* plant inhibits angiogenesis – the growth of new blood vessels. These blood vessels are crucial for supplying tumours with oxygen and nutrients, and blocking their formation can slow cancer progression. The hydroethanolic root extract demonstrated a significant suppression of angiogenesis in laboratory tests. *Croton membranaceus* is already traditionally used in Ghana to treat prostate disorders, suggesting a possible basis for its effectiveness. Further research is needed to determine the extract’s potential for clinical application and development into a prostate cancer treatment.
