A French mountaineer, Guillaume Pierrel, died after being caught in a snow avalanche while climbing K-6, a 7,282-meter peak in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. The incident occurred on June 12th at an altitude of approximately 5,000 meters, while Pierrel and two other climbers – one French and one Swiss – were on an expedition that began June 6th. The two surviving climbers were unharmed and communicated the news of Pierrel’s death via satellite communication. A recovery team has been dispatched to retrieve his body. Pakistan is a renowned destination for mountaineering, boasting five of the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, including K2. Despite earlier concerns about potential impacts from geopolitical tensions and rising fuel costs, tourism in the region is currently experiencing a surge in both foreign and domestic visitors during the peak climbing season.
