A new report from the iFrap institute highlights a discrepancy between the strong desire for children among French citizens and the country’s declining birth rate. The study’s director, Agnès Verdier-Molinié, asserts that women in the middle class are disproportionately affected by the current system of wealth redistribution. This system, she argues, inadvertently discourages having children. The report identifies a gap between aspiration and reality regarding family size in France. Verdier-Molinié proposes concrete solutions to address this demographic challenge, aiming to encourage births without hindering professional opportunities. The findings suggest a need for policy adjustments to better support families and incentivize childbearing within the French economic framework.
