France is currently experiencing its second heatwave in under a month, prompting red alerts for half the country. Temperatures are forecast to reach 43°C in Bordeaux and 39°C in Paris. This surge in extreme heat is part of a growing trend, with data from Méteo-France indicating a significant increase in heatwave frequency since 2000. Specifically, two-thirds of all heatwaves recorded in France since 1947 have occurred in the last two decades. Furthermore, half of those recent heatwaves have materialized within the past 15 years, highlighting an accelerating pattern of rising temperatures. The situation raises concerns about France’s preparedness for increasingly frequent and intense heat events and the need for adaptation strategies.
