Recent heavy monsoon rains and runoff from distant hills have caused widespread flooding in the Haor wetlands region. The rising waters, coinciding with the Bengali month of Ashar (typically marking the start of the monsoon), are inundating fields and low-lying areas. This annual event, often referred to locally as “Ashar Maisya Vasa Pani,” sees the Haor ecosystem revitalized by the influx of water. The flooding is a natural part of the Haor’s ecological cycle, bringing essential nutrients and supporting aquatic life. However, the extent of the flooding and its potential impact on crops and infrastructure are currently being assessed. Local communities are accustomed to these seasonal floods, but monitoring remains crucial to manage potential challenges. The new water spread is expected to benefit the region’s biodiversity.
