Europol has identified more than 150 individuals—both victims and perpetrators—involved in “dry rape” cases, a form of sexual assault where victims are drugged before being assaulted. The investigation, dubbed Project Medusa, involved collaboration between law enforcement agencies from several nations including Germany, France, the UK, Brazil, the US, and the Netherlands. Authorities uncovered four new online chat groups promoting misogyny and numerous leads for further investigation. Evidence suggests online platforms play a crucial role in facilitating these crimes, with perpetrators sharing images, experiences, and tips for drugging victims, alongside trading narcotics. The victims are overwhelmingly female, and the abuse often occurs repeatedly over time. Separate investigations are already underway in some countries, like the Netherlands, but are not included in this Europol count. The operation aims to improve international cooperation in tackling this growing threat.
