Europe is currently experiencing a significant drought, one of the most severe in recent years. A new study reveals that diminishing rainfall isn’t the sole cause of the worsening conditions. Increasingly intense heatwaves are driving up rates of evaporation, meaning that even comparable levels of precipitation are insufficient. This increased evaporation depletes soil moisture and reduces river flows. Essentially, the same amount of rain is no longer as effective in replenishing water resources. The findings highlight the impact of rising temperatures on water availability across the continent and suggest current rainfall levels may not be enough to combat the effects of climate change. This changing dynamic poses challenges for agriculture, ecosystems, and water management infrastructure.
