A historic heatwave swept across Europe on Saturday, with several countries recording unprecedented temperatures. Germany experienced record highs for two consecutive days, peaking at 41.5°C, while the Czech Republic reached 40.8°C near Doksy. Denmark broke a 1976 record with 37°C near Aarhus. Switzerland also saw record June temperatures, hitting 39°C in Basel. Approximately 150 million people across the continent are currently facing temperatures exceeding 35°C. The heatwave, which began in western Europe, is now moving eastward. Tragically, the heat has been linked to numerous deaths; 55 drownings in France related to cooling off in water, and an estimated 327 heat-related fatalities in Spain between Sunday and Wednesday. Scientists attribute the extreme temperatures to climate change and rapid warming in the region. A cooler air mass is expected to bring some relief later next week.
