Estonia is renewing its push for a complete European Union ban on alumina exports to Russia, according to Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna. This call follows reports of continued shipments from Ireland to Russia despite existing sanctions. Alumina is a key component in aluminum production, vital for Russia’s arms industry. Estonia argues that the current regulations contain loopholes allowing Russia to circumvent intended restrictions. Tsahkna emphasized the necessity of closing this gap to effectively weaken Russia’s military capabilities. The Estonian government believes a full ban is crucial for strengthening the impact of EU sanctions and limiting Russia’s access to materials used in weapons manufacturing. This is not the first time Estonia has advocated for this measure, signaling ongoing concern over the effectiveness of current sanctions.
