The head of Peru’s National Superintendency of Higher Education (Sunedu), Vicente Paul Espinoza, recently reported an attempt to remove him from his position. Espinoza linked this attempt to the ongoing licensing issues of approximately 60 universities established through legislative means. These universities currently lack the necessary authorization to operate legally. A day after Espinoza’s statement, the general sub-secretary of the Fentracasse workers' union responded to the allegations. The union official countered by claiming “irregularities” existed in Espinoza’s own appointment to the Sunedu leadership. This exchange signals a growing conflict surrounding university licensing and governance within Peru’s higher education system. The dispute raises questions about potential political interference and the independence of Sunedu.
