Once a simple and affordable treat, the Dutch pancake is experiencing a price surge, now costing up to twenty euros at restaurants. This shift reflects a broader trend of rising costs impacting traditionally inexpensive meals. Despite the increased price, dining out for pancakes remains a beloved Dutch custom, according to restaurant owner Bert van Zijtveld. Van Zijtveld, of De Heikamp, experienced double the usual business during the National Pancake Championship ("NK Lekkerste Pannenkoek"). The growing cost highlights a change in how pancakes are perceived – evolving from a quick bite to a more substantial and luxurious meal. This price increase hasn’t dampened the cultural appeal of enjoying pancakes together in a restaurant setting.
